One of Alan's selections yesterday was a non runner and the other didn't run his race at all, today he has two selections from Lingfield and Wetherby...
"He is dropping into Class 5 company and when running at this level or lower he has only been out of the frame once in six starts."
Richard Hannon's team are in good form at present, they have saddled four winners from their six runners over the last couple of days and they run the Middleham Park owned three-year-old Juan Horsepower back on the all weather again at Lingfield this afternoon. Two of his three wins have come on an all weather surface including winning here in a Class 3 event in March. He was placed in five of his nine races as a two-year-old and really improved after his break from being gelded, which seemed to bring about the improvement.
Hopefully the change of surface today will have a similar effect, as he has been running poorly on the turf of late but as a result of that he has come down the handicap to a mark of 77, his three previous wins were off 75, 76 & 80 so he is back on a winnable number. He also has the services of Rossa Ryan on board who is claiming 7lbs which brings him down even further. He is dropping into Class 5 company and when running at this level or lower he has only been out of the frame once in six starts. At 7.06/1 I think he is worth taking a chance with to see if he can get back to winning ways.
There are some big yards represented in this race but it is the Newcastle based trainer Pauline Robson's runner Katgary that I think will run well. Despite some poor runs of late, he was well beaten in his last two chase starts at Cartmel and Stratford, but prior to that he had been going well, winning twice over fences. He has been given a break of 53 days to recharge his batteries and hopefully he will be ready for today. He has run well fresh in the past and his current mark isn't beyond him, with 7lb claimer Liam Quinlan in the plate if he can reproduce some of that old form he should have every chance today of upsetting some of the bigger stables.
It's a real shame that Gabrial the Great's withdrawal from this race has reduced the field to seven runners as at the original prices I initially wanted to back Katgary each way but with just the two places and the rule four he has to be a win only selection now for me at 7.513/2.
