Wolverhampton and Kempton are the venues for today's Bets of the Day from Alan Thompson as he brings us two selections on the All-Weather...
"he is still a maiden but he ran a career best second over course and distance last time and he looks interesting today in this apprentice handicap"
Michael Appleby often does well at this time of year and today he runs his four-year-old gelding Cockney Boy. Although he is still a maiden, he ran a career best second over course and distance last time and he looks interesting today in this apprentice handicap. Despite being 2lbs wrong in the handicap at this low level a recreation of that last run would be sufficient to take this event. This is just his fifth start on the surface and his 14th overall with the visor applied for the first time to keep him focused I think he has the credentials to go very close here.
Top Offer and Jack of Diamonds are probably the ones that will give him most to do, I don't like Top Offer as an eight-years-old who hasn't won for 21 starts, his last win was in February 2016. Jack of Diamonds looks the one to beat, he is a four time course and distance winner and won here just last month, however he finished last of 13 in his latest start at Nottingham, which doesn't inspire confidence and I prefer to give Cockney Boy a chance to get his head in front for the first time today.
Ninjago is hardly what you would call prolific but he does seem to like it round here, having run here three times, winning twice. Both of those wins were off ratings above 100 and although Paul Midgley's charge has been raised 2lbs for his win at Newmarket recently, he is still only running today off 80. He followed up that Newmarket win with two decent third placed efforts and looks like he may be starting to enjoy the game again, add the quality of Luke Morris in the plate and he looks like he has a good opportunity in this field.
Danecase is the current market principle and has only received a 2lbs rise for his latest win at Lingfield last month, that win makes it an impressive two wins from six runs this year. However, he has had seven starts in this class of race or better and as yet he hasn't managed to make the frame. Its not a race that will live long in the memory but Ninjago looks to have a decent chance at 5/1.
