Bets Of The Day: O'Meara stayer to land the spoils in marathon

Pontefract stage their first meeting of the Flat season on Tuesday, and Alan Dudman is on hand with two win selections from the Yorkshire venue...

"David O'Meara's five-year-old won a handicap at Ayr last season over 1m5f, and even that looked on the sharp side, as he tends to hit a flat spot. Pontefract could be absolutely ideal for the son of Manduro, who looks every inch a grinding type."

15:10 Pontefract - Dascombe can land sprint

The start of the Flat season has seen trainer Tom Dascombe's horses start fairly well - and his Reflektor can have a big say in the 15:10.

The three-year-old landed a Leicester maiden on his fourth start last year as a juvenile, and put in a much-improved display on soft ground to win by three-and-a-half lengths. He relished testing ground that afternoon, and seemed to enjoy front running tactics. That race has worked out too - with a couple of the vanquished going on to net victories - including multiple scorer Kingsley Klarion.

Dascombe's charge makes his handicap debut from a mark of 84 on Tuesday, and is drawn to attack in three. I certainly like pacesetters at the Yorkshire venue, and this horse is related to a couple of decent sprinters. He looks the type who could pick up a few pots this season.

15:45 Pontefract - Stamina the key for Sinakar

Round One of the Pontefract Stayers Championship for 2016. A grand title, and a race that includes a couple of old favourites and the winner of the last two runnings of this marathon - Surprise Vendor.

With the forecast heavy ground, this extreme test could see a few wobbling at the end of the 2m2f. One horse who has been crying out for a stiff track and a trip is Sinakar. And he gets the nod at 8.07/1.

As much as I enjoy these staying races, there are plenty of beatable horses in this. I think American Life might go well in the ground, but Sinakar is a potential improver in a bad affair. Consider throwing in a substantial back in-running at 50 plus with his style and flat spot.
