Alan hit the mark with both of his selections yesterday and despite the non runners and rule 4's he still managed to make a decent profit on the day. Today he has selections from Hexham and Southwell...
"The seven-year-old has slowly been sliding down the ratings and is running off a mark of 93 today, on his previous chase start he was off 100"
14:30 Hexham - Turtle Cask @ 8.515/2 Exchange
Penrith based trainer Dianne Sayer has only tried Turtle Cask once over fences and it wasn't that successful. He ran in a Novice Handicap Chase at this track, was tailed off and eventually pulled up. However, I believe he is better than that effort, he will just love the soft ground at Hexham today and the trip won't be a problem. The seven-year-old has slowly been sliding down the ratings and is running off a mark of 93 today, on his previous chase start he was off 100
While both of Turtle Cask's wins have come over hurdles, they have both come on soft ground, in better class than this and his last win, was with today's pilot Brian Hughes, who steered him home to win by 13 lengths. No doubt I am taking a chance that he will take to fences better than his last experience but at around 8.515/2 on the Exchange, I think that is a chance well worth taking.
This is a fascinating "hands and heels" race at Southwell, the two market principles both have to carry 7lb penalties for recent wins and while they are both in good form they are big enough burdens to open the door for something else.
The one I want to take against them is the thirteen-year-old Pret A Thou, who's last win, in December, was over fences off 110 but ran a very decent hurdle race last time, finishing second of 11 after leading until the final stages where he was eventually beaten just over two lengths.
If I could guarantee that all eight would go to post then I would be recommending Pret A Thou as an each-way selection but the way horses were taken out of races yesterday, there is no guarantee that all eight will start.
I am expecting Loves Destination and Riddlestown to both be popular in the market as both horses are three time winners this season. While I am happy backing Pret A Thou at 5/1, due to this anticipated support he could go off even bigger. For that reason, in my opinion, he is better backed on the Sportsbook with Best Odds Guaranteed - for the purposes of the column P&L though, I will be backing him win only at 5/1.
