Bets of the Day: Morello Royale to give Colin Tizzard another festive gift

Alan could only find a runner-up at Kempton yesterday but is looking to get back into the winners' enclosure with his selections from Kempton and Chepstow today...

13:10 Kempton - Back Morello Royale @ 8/1

Two winners at yesterdays meeting and Colin Tizzard could add to that tally with his first runner of the day at the meeting, in the shape of Morello Royale who certainly has the class to take this mares handicap hurdle. Morello Royale gained some valuable black type in her form book when she stayed on gamely to win over this course and distance in a November 2015 listed event.

She was certainly disappointing when failing to get past the first fence on her chasing debut last time out, but a return to the smaller obstacles today and dropping back into handicap company should see her back to her best.

The horse she has to beat today is the ultra consistent Nordic Nymph from the Henry Daly yard. The seven-year-old mare has won five of her last six starts (second in the other), but she is now running off a mark of 118, some 38lbs higher than when she started that sequence and this is another step up in class. At the odds I would rather be on the Tizzard horse at more than double the price.

14:40 Chepstow - Back Baie Des Iles @ 16/1 Each Way

The Welsh National is a unique race in that it is normally a race of attrition and the key is often finding the runner that will be suited by the through test rather than the one that is ahead of the handicapper. After looking through the field I was drawn to Baie Des Iles, an Irish raider from the Ross O'Sullivan yard with his wife Katie Walsh on board.

The only negative I have is that the grey mare is only five-year-old and historically this race generally goes to an older horse. However, she does have plenty going for her to counteract that age stat. I watched a recording of her run in the Irish National last year when she was sixth and she didn't get the best of runs. Surrounded by a multitude of Gigginstown-owned horses she lost her place on the turn for home but still kept on well at the finish. She stays all day, jumps well, is off a fairly light weight and the worse the ground is the better.

I would expect her to be doing her best work at the end, hopefully staying on to return a profit at a big price.
