Bets Of The Day: Make some bucks with a lay of Captain

There will be plenty of mud flying around at Wetherby and Taunton on Tuesday

Alan Dudman highlights two potential selections at Wetherby on Tuesday, and also targets a lay at Taunton in his latest instalment...

"He could be very good of course; but there's a chance that with the name (his sire is a full brother to Big Buck's) and the fact he's with the champion trainer, means he'll go off shorter than he should."

Lay Captain Buck's @ 2.1011/10 in the 17:20 at Taunton

15:50 Wetherby - Retrieve The Stick to relish ground

Malcolm Jefferson's Retrieve The Stick warrants an interest in the 15:50 Handicap Chase.

Put simply, she likes testing conditions, and with soft and heavy in places in Yorkshire for Tuesday, her price of 4/1 is appealing.

The seven-year-old mare has raced five times over fences, and could still be reasonably well treated from a mark of 108. Jefferson trained her mother Anabranch - who ran in the Castleford Chase at Wetherby in 1999 (when it held Grade 2 status). Anabranch was tough and improved over the larger obstacles, so there's hope that Retrieve The Stick can get better.

She certainly needs to leap with more fluency than she displayed at Newcastle recently, but I'm not sure the tactics worked that day; she's better with a more positive ride.

Conditions will suit, which is a big factor.

16:25 Wetherby - Smith to strike again

I'm clearly a fan of Sue Smith, and she can bag another success in a winnable handicap hurdle.

The favourite Zephyros Bleu at 4/5 rates as poor value, and the manner in which he came off the bridle early at Wincanton recently; suggests the play could be to ask for a higher price in-running.

The pick is Palm Grey however, who has established more from his previous 10 outings over hurdles. The eight-year-old has also scored in heavy terrain, but needs to bounce back after two poor efforts - and he can, especially with a contest that lacks depth, and not many rivals in form.

17:20 Taunton - Make some bucks with a lay

Come 17:20, the ground could be churned to pieces, and if the recent Taunton meetings are anything to go by - this will be very hard work.

The bumper could be an interesting race; and has more depth than the market believes. But I'm not sure I want to take 11/10 on Captain Bucks for Paul Nicholls.

He could be very good of course; but there's a chance that with the name (his sire is a full brother to Big Buck's) and the fact he's with the champion trainer, means he'll go off shorter than he should. This will be his first run in the UK, and hasn't had a race since May 2015, when he finished third at Vichy in the French provinces.

I mentioned depth, and we have a few in the field running for us. Harry Fry's Misterton shaped well at the track on his debut (albeit on good ground). Whilst Evan Williams' Mac Gregory travelled very powerfully to score at Ludlow on his debut. That could be a weak race, but he looked good.

And throw into the mix a reasonably well-bred newcomer for Victor Dartnall, and Cucklington for Colin Tizzard - who was well-backed on debut but weakened badly. He's since had a wind op and sports a tongue tie, there's enough there to press the pink button.

Tuesday's Recommended Bets

Back Retrieve The Stick @ 4/1 Sportsbook price in the 15:50 at Wetherby
Back Palm Grey @ 5.204/1 in the 16:25 at Wetherby
Lay Captain Buck's @ 2.1011/10 in the 17:20 at Taunton
