No luck for Alan yesterday as neither of his selections managed to produce a winner, today though he has two more selections from Exeter and Pontefract...
"She looks the type that could be better over the larger obstacles."
Nancys Trix has been off the course for 121 days but returns today to make her first appearance over fences and also for her new yard. Previously, the lightly-raced eight-year-old was trained by David Loder but he now runs for Tom George and he could make the perfect start for his new trainer. He has won a point-to-point over three miles (albeit that win was over two years ago), and the last time we seen her was when she finished third behind Flemi Two Toes in a hurdle race at Southwell over the same distance.
While she is yet to win under rules, she was steadily getting closer over hurdles and looks the type that could be better over the larger obstacles, that she tackles for the first time today. At 13/2 I think she is worth taking a chance with in a race that should't take too much winning. The market leader, Meldrum Lad, is a decent type but has to carry a 7lb penalty for a four-and-a-half length victory last time out at Huntingdon. I think that may be a bit too much to ask of Meldrum Lad and at the prices I fancy Nancys Trix could well get ahead of him today.
This race is a six furlong sprint at Pontefract and the market principle Always Thankful from the Ismail Mohammed yard, looks a worthy favourite and could take some beating today. This three-year-old filly wasn't a cheap purchase, costing almost a quarter of a million guineas as a two-year-old and she's got some smart form to her name having raced in a couple of competitive maidens towards the end of last year. She was only beaten just over four lengths by Really Special in a race where three of the horse that finished ahead of her have since come out and won at the next time of asking, so that form looks pretty solid and gives her a serious chance in this.
Today she remains at six furlongs and she should really be breaking her maiden here to justify the price tag. Top jockey Silvestre de Sousa has been booked to do the steering.
