Bets Of The Day: Angel to deliver perfect display at Salisbury

Trainer Andrew Balding has a good chance of landing Salisbury's Group 3 on Thursday

Alan Dudman drew a blank yesterday, and is hoping to end his final day in the tipping chair on a high - with a selection for the best race of the afternoon at Salisbury on Thursday...

"She put the race to bed fairly quickly last time and clearly enjoyed the faster ground. With all manner of improvers in the contest, those with a wealth of experience could be vulnerable."

14:20 Sedgefield - Slack to scoop staying prize

Well I did say I didn't like Bath much as a punting track. After Entrench's performance yesterday - I'm not sure there'll be anymore tips from that venue in the future.

On to Sedgefield we go...

This staying handicap hurdle over 3m3f is a tricky little race. Luccombe Down is on a roll, and will be seeking a fourth successive victory; but he is racing from a career high mark. He is available at around 3.505/2 to back - which is short enough considering he has to prove his stamina over this extra trip.

I have no such issues with Kenneth Slack's Omid, who has won over course and distance, and is the one guaranteed stayer at this unique marathon test.

He can often set a good pace up front, and he can maintain it. The eight-year-old gelding dominated from the front to win at Cartmel last time (over 3m2f), and the rain helped to make it a lung-burster - which he relished.

His victory here in 2015 came on quick ground, and he scored by 10 lengths from a mark of 100. He is higher now with a better standard of opposition - but if he makes this a proper test, he's the one that will still be going strong at the end.

The biggest danger could well be Optimistic Bias, who is lightly-raced and should be fine over this trip. But Omid absolutely bolted up last time under Thomas Dowson - who rides again with his valuable claim. Obviously this is a much tougher race, but his stamina sways me.

15:40 Salisbury - Balding to unleash the Angel in fillies' feature

The feature race at 15:40 is the Group 3 Dick Poole Fillies' over 6f, and we have the mix of horses who have been kept busy - with four of the field achieving ratings from plenty of outings of 91, 92, 97 and 89 - and those that have had one or two runs.

So, siding with the back-end of season fillies for success - Andrew Balding's Perfect Angel comes into the bracket as a juvenile with a decent future.

The daughter of Dark Angel made a very encouraging debut at Newbury in soft ground, and subsequently improved to win on her second start at the Goodwood - landing a fairly warm maiden. She beat Richard Hannon's Promising that day - who has gone on to finish runner-up with a big effort in the Group 3 Prestige Stakes at the Sussex venue.

She put the race to bed fairly quickly last time and clearly enjoyed the faster ground. With all manner of improvers in the contest, those with a wealth of experience could be vulnerable.

Perfect Angel holds entries later this season in the Group 1 Fillies' Mile and Cheveley Park Stakes.
