Bets of the Day: The improving Ami Desbois looks tough to beat at Doncaster

For the final time this year from Alan, he has two selections from Doncaster and Southwell for today's Bets of the Day...

"He is proven over the trip which can't be said for some of his market rivals today"

Back Ami Desbois @ 3/1 in the 14:40 Doncaster

14:40 Doncaster - Back Ami Desbois @ 3/1

Graeme McPherson may have found a good contest for Ami Desbois to get his head in front again. He has been raised 7lbs by the handicapper for his impressive second at Cheltenham in Grade 2 company, where he finished just a length behind the 140+ rated Wholesome. Interesting that he was also entered in the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle race at Newbury on New Year's Eve but they have swerved that in preference for this.

He won his maiden in impressive style at Hexham back in May and then after a 195 day absence showed he was ahead of the handicapper by winning a decent Class 3 handicap at Haydock. He is proven over the trip which can't be said for some of his market rivals today. Ten Sixty and Abricot De L'oasis the next two in the betting are yet to win beyond two and half miles.

With his regular companion Kielan Woods doing the steering, everything looks to be in place for a big run.

13:15 Southwell - Back Areyoutheway @ 5/1

Areyoutheway showed improved form when finishing second at Chelmsford City last time out over a mile and two furlongs, that trip may have been asking a bit too much of the two-year-old gelding and he drops back to a mile today as well as making his appearance on fibresand, which should suit him and his trainer Mike Appleby always has plenty of winners here, including landing a treble at the last meeting that was held here on the 20th December.

The only other previous winners in the field are current favourite Dusty Bin and the bottom rated Viola Park. Dusty Bin looks to be the biggest danger, but his win came over the minimum trip, although he has been gradually stepping up and was only beaten a short head over seven furlongs last time out at Newcastle, it will be interesting to see if he can get a mile. At the prices though my preference is to go with the Mick Appleby charge Areyoutheway.
