Alan Thompson chalked up another winner yesterday and brings the curtain down on another profitable week in the chair with his final two selections for this stint from Pontefract and Chelmsford...
"When he last won he was off a mark of 90, today he is running off 73."
Richard Fahey saddles Grandads World in the this six furlong handicap at Pontefract today and I think it is time he got his head back in front for the first time since 2015. After winning two (both at this track) of his first three career starts he hasn't won any of his next 22 runs. However, this likable five-year-old has come far enough down the the ratings to go in again today. When he last won he was off a mark of 90, today he is running off 73.
He only went down by a neck at Epsom two weeks ago showing he is starting to get to a winning level and he was running on well at the end of that race just failing to reel in the winner who was impressive on the day. Paul Hanagan is in the plate having ridden four winners in his last 12 mounts and he knows the horse well having partnered him on many occasions in the past. Back on a course he obviously likes, with a lightweight, a jockey he is familiar with and decent price to boot, I think he has everything right today.
Sir Mark Prescott's charge Starshell has been sent off favourite for his last four starts but just hasn't been able to confirm that market support, finishing with two seconds a third and a fourth, though the last two have been heavy defeats in terms of distance they were both on ground that didn't suit the horse. These defeats though have helped to keep the selection on the same rating which seems like it is winnable mark also the first time cheekpieces are expected to bring more improvement and with the more than capable Luke Morris on board, its time to break his maiden tag.
The biggest challenge looks like it will come in the shape of the Michael Bell trained Glassalt, a lightly raced three-year-old filly running in the Queens colours. She is also still a maiden who made her only appearance this year in August at Yarmouth, where she finished third that day over a little short of a mile and a half that day suggesting the step up in trip here could be ideal. Off a rating of just 63 tonight you would expect to her to be on premises at the end but I don't think she is good enough to beat Starshell.
