Bets of the Day: Moore and Williams have Aces in the pack at Newmarket

In-form Alan Thompson fancies one at Newmarket this afternoon

It's been a great week for Alan Thompson who scored with both his selections again yesterday, and today he fancies one at Newmarket and one at Newcastle as he bids farewell to his latest stint in the tipping chair...

"He ran last time over six furlongs at Epsom and stayed on well at the end, so returning to seven today won't be a problem for him."

Back Aces @ 2/1 - 16:25 Newmarket

Moore mount holds all the Aces

My best bet of the day is Aces who is running in a class 2 seven furlong race with eight going to post. Despite his best form coming on softer ground I think Ian Williams' charge is still a worthy favourite. Also, the booking of Ryan Moore, caught my eye. He ran last time over six furlongs at Epsom and stayed on well at the end, so returning to seven today won't be a problem for him. He looks the one to beat.

I think On The Warpath for Charlie Appleby may need the run after being off the course for a while and I thought the main danger may come from Saluti who is seeking a hat-trick after winning here and at Haydock previously. He's up 3lb for his latest win and he steps up in class today and that combination may just keep him behind my selection.

Race should be run to suit Gallipoli

Today is the first day of the three day Plate Meeting at Gosforth Park and the feature race of the day is the Class 2 seven furlong handicap at 16:50. It's a competitive race with nine going to post and I think that Gallipoli has a good chance at an each way price. The race should be run at a good pace and that could set it up perfectly for Richard Fahey's charge who was placed off a pound higher at Lingfield last month. He has run here before and wasn't beaten far over course and distance in February and a repeat of that effort surely puts him in the mix.

I think the two market principles, Shared Equity and Dream Today, both need to prove themselves on the surface and they will both want to lead. That could see them both waste precious energy that won't help them in the latter stages of the race, if either of them don't make the frame then it's hard to see what else can keep Gallipoli out of the three so for that reason I will be backing him each-way.
