Bets Of The Day: Cumani and Walker to combine for HQ success

Newmarket trainer Luca Cumani will be eyeing success with Shakopee

Alan Dudman gained a winner with Sky Hunter yesterday, and is looking to end his stint on a high with two selections for an excellent card at Newmarket on Thursday...

"His other appearance worth noting in 2016 was the victory at Doncaster in a steadily-run affair. He quickened up smartly that day for a middle-distance horse, and he could still do some damage from his current mark of 95."

16:15 Newmarket - Walker's Belle to enjoy new distance

I've been waiting for Justice Belle to run over 2m for the first time, and I get my wish for a decent Thursday card at Newmarket as she lines up in the Listed race at 16:15.

Sightings of Ed Walker's filly this season have been rare; and her sole outing in 2016 came recently at Haydock over 1m6f in soft ground. Quite a few were held-up in that race behind Intense Tango, with visibility pretty poor as well. Conditions looked fairly tough, but as a comeback run, it was a pleasing effort.

The last campaign was her time in excelsis as a three-year-old, and she improved 25lb with two minor victories from marks in the 70s. However, a couple of runs in decent handicaps at Newmarket and Kempton showcased her abilities well.

Her endeavour in the Old Rowley Cup over 1m4f at Newmarket gave a strong signal she could stay Thursday's trip, as she finished her race off well to earn third from a mark of 89.

Of course she has to improve a fair bit on official figures, but I think she could be a stayer with more to come. Priced at around 13.012/1 to win, she will get the nod in the place market here.

16:50 Newmarket - Shakopee to bounce back after mixed efforts

This looks a really good 1m4f handicap at headquarters, and the list of fascinating contenders include a son of the mighty Ouija Board.

I won't be backing the great mare's offspring (Frontiersman), but I will side with Luca Cumani's Shakopee at a decent price of around 10.09/1 for the 16:50.

The four-year-old has 'enjoyed' (or endured) something of a mixed bag of a season, with two poor runs and two rather good ones. The pair of standouts include a fine effort in a 0-105 at York last month - a handicap in which he finished second to Roger Varian's Barsanti, who is a very talented performer earmarked for some international races. Shakopee was held up, and whilst the ground was officially given as good to firm - a bit of rain had got in to the surface and it was reportedly loose on top.

The selection wants quick turf - and it appears the forecast will stay dry for Thursday.

His other appearance worth noting in 2016 was the victory at Doncaster in a steadily-run affair. He quickened up smartly that day for a middle-distance horse, and he could still do some damage from his current mark of 95.

I can excuse the poor runs this campaign too. Last time he appeared in the Intense Tango race at Haydock over 1m6f in soft, and previously he didn't handle the track at Goodwood.
