For the final time this week Alan Thompson has two selected a couple of mares to get him back into the winners enclosure from Market Rasen and Newcastle...
"looks like a likely stayer so the step up in trip could well allow her to show her true potential"
Back Martila @ 7/2 in the 12:55 at Market Rasen
Martila is dropping in class to win this
Market Rasen 12:55
This can go to Pauline Robson's six-year-old mare Martila, she is dropping down to a Class 4 event after finishing a good fourth in a Class 2 event at Ayr last time. She should find it much easier in this company and although this is her first time going over two miles and one furlong, she looks like a likely stayer so the step up in trip could well allow her to show her true potential. The last time she won was 12 months ago but that was off the same mark as she is running off today so she should have no problem off this rating.
Hillcrest Fire is one of the runners in the race that I am keen to take on, I think she is too short at 5/2. She was last seen over hurdles finishing a distant third at Cheltenham, she has a tendency to not settle in her races and until she controls that it's hard to see her winning, also the step up in trip is a big concern. The other fancied runner is Queen Of The Wind from the Colin Tizzard yard, she won at Ffos Las on her latest outing and she gets to race off the same mark today (due to be 5lbs higher), she is more of a danger to the selection in my opinion but at the prices I prefer Martila today.
Donnachies Girl can continue her good form at the track
Alistair Whillans trains in the Scottish Border town of Hawick and is a regular visitor to the Newcastle track and his runner today the five-year-old mare Donnachies Girl enjoys her racing here, she has recorded a win and two places from four visits. All her runs here have been off a higher mark than she returns today and was placed from 3lbs higher over course and distance last month in a much more competitive contest than this, on paper this looks like an easier task for her.
Coral Queen from the Ray Craggs team looks like the one to give the selection the most to do, she did much better when fitted with first time cheekpieces here last time and if that apparatus continues to have the desired effect she could certainly be in the shake up. However, she is 4lbs higher than that run and currently on a career high mark, so she will have to continue to improve to get her head in front.
