Bets of the Day: Foolaad can make it four in a row at Southwell

Roy Bowring's prolific winner can do it again at Southwell
Roy Bowring's prolific winner can do it again at Southwell

Alan's best bet of the day finished third at 8/1 to land the place part of his each-way wager in the veterans race at Doncaster yesterday. He is looking to finish this stint in the tipping chair in style with two selections from Sedgfield and Southwell...

"He will have to do it off 4lbs higher today but he looks a class above these at the minute and should still have more to offer as he’s lightly raced for his age."

Back Foolaad @ 7/4 in the 15:45 Southwell

15:45 Southwell - Back Foolaad @ 7/4

He may not be a big price but Foolaad looks a good thing to make it a four timer this time. He ran up a hat-trick of wins around this time last year with two wins at Newcastle and a win at Thirsk but failed to convert the fourth when he was held to third in a Class 3 handicap at Doncaster. This time his sequence of wins have all come over the same course and distance including a very easy victory two weeks ago. Roy Bowring's serial winner will have to do it off 4lbs higher today but he looks a class above these at the minute and should still have more to offer as he's lightly raced for his age.

There really doesn't look to be too much strength in depth in the race, with the biggest danger looking to come from Ascot Day for the David Simcock yard but his three starts this year he has failed to even place, finishing last of nine, fourth of eight and seventh of nine. His latest start was especially poor, but that was over six furlongs and the drop back to five today should help. Despite this I can't see that being enough for him to halt Foolaad's current sequence and I fully expect Robert Winston to steer the selection home ahead of these.

16:30 Sedgfield - Back Dark and Dangerous Each Way @ 13/2

Donald McCain trains the favourite here, Derrynane, who had to carry a penalty when second on his latest start after winning as he liked at Catterick the time before. He was stepping up in trip that day and this step back to two miles one furlong will probably suit him more, he is though 11lbs higher than his first handicap win but there is potentially more improvement to come. He is though very short here and I would rather look for something that has a chance of beating him but could also run into a place and produce a profitable return.

The one I thought might be capable of doing that and give the favourite a run for his money is Dark and Dangerous from the local yard of Simon Waugh. He won this race last year and clearly enjoys the track, his last four wins have all come over this course and distance, the last of those victories off 3lbs higher than he gets in today. He looks particularly well handicapped today and with his usual partner, the trainer's daughter Aimee Waugh, in the plate taking a handy 7lbs off he could be right in the mix at the end of this.
