Bets of the Day: Consistent Roller can land a decent handicap at Haydock tonight

Roller should take all the beating but keep an eye on Tom Dascombe's runner
Roller should take all the beating but keep an eye on Tom Dascombe's runner

Alan's 7.06/1 bet of the day was just touched off yesterday, beaten a head. He's looking for better luck today with a pair of selections from Nottingham and Haydock...

"Last time out at Ripon he was only beaten a head and he has been left on the same handicap mark tonight"

Back Roller @ 5/2 in the 19:40 Haydock

19:40 Haydock - Back Roller @ 5/2

Michael Easterby's very consistent four-year-old Roller runs in this very decent £9,000 handicap tonight, with two wins and three places from his six starts he is never normally that far away. Last time out at Ripon he was only beaten a head by Boots And Spurs and he has been left on the same handicap mark tonight and with his usual partner Nathan Evans, a very good 3lb claimer, on board it suggests he is more than capable of taking a race like this.

It's very rare I would recommend backing two horses in the same race but I just wanted to mention that Tom Dascombe has won two of the three runnings of this race and is represented by Calder Prince at a big price today. This son of Dark Angel has raced here twice before with a win last May and a fourth this April. He hasn't won now in 12 races despite being gelded, but looks like he could have been laid out for this particular contest and off today's weight looks to have a good each-way claims.

I will be backing Roller for the column to win the race but I wouldn't want to put anyone off if they wanted a little bet each-way on Calder Prince.

1630 Nottingham - Back Waves @ 7/1

A couple of horses with "sea" references catch my eye in this Nottingham race, Ocean Drive for William Haggis could be thrown in here if she can repeat her second to Emenem last time out. Emenem was last seen finishing second on Derby day at Epsom in a far better race than this but the price reflects that form and at 5/4 in a race like this I prefer to look elsewhere.

Which led me to Eve Johnston Houghton's runner Waves who produced a career best by some margin in her first three-year-old handicap at Bath, winning by a comfortable and very impressive four-and-a-half lengths on soft ground. She wasn't able to continue the improvement on better ground and from a 9lb higher mark at Leicester last time out but she looked as if this further step up in trip wouldn't be a problem. At 7/1 I would prefer to back her to see if she can find that Bath form again and get the better of Ocean Drive.
