Its the turn of the ladies today in the shape of the 1,000 Guineas and Alan has a win and each way selection for the big race as well as another on the card...
"She is the only one in the field who has won a Group 1 at this trip"
Joseph O'Brien to train his next Classic winner
With plenty of doubtful stayers in the 1,000 Guineas I want to be with the fillies with the stamina-laden pedigrees. Where's the pace coming from in this race? Well I think that could well be Star Terms in stall 5 and I reckon Fairyland may well be allowed to bowl along with her. I'm leaning to those drawn low with stamina in the pedigree which is why I like Iridessa and Hermosa.
The former ran a great comeback race on soft ground at Leopardstown and can only come on for that run for a trainer who has already established himself as a target trainer at the highest level. Iridessa is one of only three Group 1 winners in the race and the only one who has won a Group 1 at this trip so it's surprising to see her available at 6.05/1 on the Sportsbook and she is my main selection.
Hermosa can't be discounted though. She has a lovely pedigree and is the only filly in the race from the mighty Galileo. Given his Classic record I think she's a massive price on the Betfair Sportsbook at 21.020/1 to run a huge race. Both these fillies fought out the finish in the fillies' mile over this course and distance, finishing first and second respectively which proves they act on the track. They will both get the trip easily and given there's plenty in the race that could struggle with the distance in a competitively run race I'd be disappointed if they weren't both involved in the finish.
Hard to see Gifted Master out the frame
Gifted Master faces his easiest task for some time, he won this race last year off a mark of 109 and it's fair to say it was a deeper and more competitive affair than today's race. He then went on to win the Stewards Cup off a mark of 111. So today, in a lesser race off 109, he's very well handicapped even off such a high mark. Since that Goodwood win he ran in a competitive Listed event, a Group 3 and most recently a Group 3 over course and distance in which he wasn't beaten far having tried to lay up with some very speedy horses. The horse that finished one place in front of him that day, Equilateral, just got chinned in the Palace House Stakes yesterday.
He faces nothing of the same calibre today and I can see him being able to easily sit at the front of the field and then make a long run for home. Let's not forget his record at this course reads five wins and one place from ten runs, while his record at this time of year reads two wins from four runs. Throw in the fact James Doyle rides this track so well and I think the case has been made for a good each-way bet.
