Bets of the Day: Greyed A can make his mark at Fontwell today

No luck for Alan yesterday but he is looking to get back on track with two selections from Fontwell and Southwell..

"Dr Richard Newland has seen some improvement already this season out of his lightly raced six-year-old grey, but there could still be more to come."

16:30 Fontwell - Back Greyed A @ 11/4

Greyed A wasn't at his best when he ran at Ludlow last time out but he was stepping up to three miles for the first time under rules and this drop back in trip could be just what the doctor ordered. Dr Richard Newland has seen some improvement already this season out of his lightly raced six-year-old grey but there could still be more to come and he has the cheekpieces on for the first time today.

The Newland team are a very shrewd operation and despite not having a busy schedule in February, they have produced three winners out of their last five runners. Prior to his attempt at three miles last time he has been running well since going handicapping, losing his maiden tag with ease at Lingfield at the end of November. If he runs to the same level as that he has to to go close and you wouldn't rule out a career-best effort given he's so lightly-raced, he also has Top jockey Sam Twiston-Davies on board.

16:10 Southwell - Back Sam Red @ 9/4

Sam Red was unlucky to run into the improving Ami Desbois at Wetherby earlier this month and without anything of that ability in this field this looks like a perfect opportunity to go one better this time in just his third start for Dan Skelton. He is a lightly-raced six-year-old who has won just one race, that being a Navan maiden hurdle in March a couple of years ago. It's fair to say he found life tough after that in Ireland, but this looks like a decent opportunity for the still relatively unexposed selection.

He has the burden of top weight to carry around Southwell today and it's probably fair to say that Dan Skelton's horses are running okay without firing as well as he might be hoping for at the moment, but with his brother Harry onboard, I think he is more than capable of putting another winner on the board for the Skeltons.
