Bets of the Day: Zamparelli can win on just his second start over fences

Horses taking a fence
The step up in trip today could be the key for Zamparelli

Alan's best bet of the day finished a frustrating second yesterday, but our man is confident he can go one better today with selections at Stratford and Wincanton...

"He looks to be well handicapped, has the cheekpieces and tongue tie on today and I expect him to be right there at the business end of the race."

Back Zamparelli @ 9/2 in the 14:35 Stratford

14:35 Stratford - Back Zamparelli @ 9/2

This Class 4 competitive Novices Handicap Chase has attracted a decent field of 11 runners and the one I like is the Dan Skelton trained six-year-old Zamparelli. He had the wind surgery operation in February of this year and his three runs since then have been promising, including a third at Southwell on his one run over fences so far. He was caught a bit flat footed that day as they kicked for home but that was over the minimum trip and the step up today will certain help his cause. He looks to be well handicapped, has the cheekpieces and tongue tie on today and in this company, with Harry Skelton on board, I expect him to be right there at the business end of the race.

If he is to be successful then the one he looks like having to get the better of is the 10-year-old veteran Crafty Roberto, as you would expect he has more experience over fences than most of these. He normally puts in his best performances on this quicker going which is a plus, but his better efforts are over shorter than this and with 21 unsuccessful starts, I think he may find one or two too good for him again over this trip and I suspect one of them may be Zamparelli.

15:50 Wincanton - Back Canoodle @ 4/1

This race is a Class 4 hurdle race for military riders only, normally in these races you just have to look for whoever Guy Disney is riding and that tends to be there or thereabouts, however, I want to take on Guy today as the one that stands out for me is Hughie Morrison's Canoodle. The six-year-old mare produced the two best runs of her career going right handed on quick ground, the same conditions she enjoys here. She finished second and won those races last April off a mark of 117 and gets in here today 3lbs better off. So with the sun on her back again I am hoping that Major Harry Wallace can help her rediscover that form as a reproduction of either of those runs would see her home in this company.

As mentioned Guy Disney tends to the be man to beat in these races so no surprise to see him on board the favourite, Clash Of D Titans for Warren Greatrex. He might well be on a good mark for his handicap debut after two placed efforts so far but you have to have concerns over the ground for him. Both those runs came on heavy ground and he is yet to run on better than yielding to soft. If he can handle the ground and with the top jockey in the plate he is going to be hard to beat but at 4/1 and proven in these conditions I am prepared to side with Canoodle today.
