Bets of the Day: Drumcliff makes the journey north in search of a victory

Alan is looking to bounce back from a disappointing start to the week with two selections from the listed race at Musselburgh and the Winter Derby trial at Lingfield...

"Harry Fry's horses are in good form, he has sent out four winners from his last 12 runners"

15:15 Musselburgh - Back Drumcliff @ 5/2

The J P McManus-owned runner Drumcliff had attracted good market support this time last week for the final race at Cheltenham but was taken out at the last minute, the official reason was the going, which was declared as soft (good to soft in places). I can only assume that Harry Fry thinks the good ground in Scotland will suit the horse better as he looks for his first win of the season after a couple of second placed finishes. He was particularly unlucky last time out where he was badly hampered two out and lost his action, after traveling well up to that point.

Assuming he goes off favourite the stats are very much against the selection, just two winning favourites in the last ten renewals. Harry Fry's horses are in good form, he has sent out four winners from his last 12 runners. It's a long way from Dorset to Edinburgh and I can't see him sending Drumcliff there if he doesn't think he has a good chance and with Noel Fehily doing the steering, I think he is there to run a big race.

15:05 Lingfield - Back Arab Spring @ 5/2

Arab Spring is a very smart horse, trained by Sir Michael Stoute who makes his first start for 111 days. Having missed most of last year through injury the lightly raced seven-year-old also has the services of top jockey Ryan Moore in the plate and his last start was in an Italian Group 1, where he finished fourth.

While most of his starts have been on turf, he has won both his starts on the all weather at Kempton. His last win coming in a mile-and-a-half Group 3 contest, where he was driven clear of the field in the final furlong and eased down to win by a comfortable couple of lengths. He has to carry a 5lb penalty for that success today and the drop back to one mile two furlongs is a slight concern but I think he has the class to pull it off.
