Bets of the Day: Growl to put in another good effort in the Stewards Cup

Goodwood will be packed for the Stewards Cup

No luck for Alan at Goodwood yesterday but he is hopeful the final day of the festival will pay dividends...

"Richard Farhey's sprinter has finished fourth in the last two renewals"

Growl to make it third time lucky in the Stewards

Growl is looking to make it third time lucky in the Stewards Cup today, Richard Fahey's sprinter has finished fourth in the last two runnings of the race, two years ago behind Dancing Star from a mark of 99 (he then finished second in the Ayr Gold Cup after that run) and last year behind Lancelot Du Lac from 10lb higher, however he did have Connor Murtagh taking 7lb off his back that time. He obviously likes these big field handicaps and at some point his time must come.

He was second on his return this year, but was beaten nine lengths by Kachy, and then he wasn't great after being sent off at 8/1 but finished mid division in the Wokingham at Ascot but there was much more to like about his most recent effort at York, when he finished a good fourth to Flying Pursuits, for which the handicapper dropped him another pound down to 98. At 14/1 and with five places available on the Sportsbook, I think he is worth supporting to make the frame for the third year in a row.

Melting Dew to get his hat-trick

Sir Michael Stoute runs the hat-trick seeking Melting Dew in the Class 2 long distance handicap and the form of his charge took a big boost earlier in the week, last time out he out-battled subsequent Glorious Goodwood Handicap winner Alfarris (won on Tuesday) by a neck. He needed to be shaken up early on a bit that day over one mile two furlongs but will be much more at home over today's extra half a mile and with Ryan Moore in excellent form and just a 4lbs rise for that victory he should be tough to beat.

The one that may give him the most to do is Charlie Appleby's Walton Street who was a good third at Royal Ascot last time and looks open to plenty of improvement upped in distance. Prior to that he was a winner over one mile four furlongs at Meydan and has finished fourth here in a listed race over todays trip so he has no stamina concerns. The yard are also in great form so he is a main danger to the selection but Sir Michael Stoute also knows how to win round here and I think Melting Dew will get the better of him today.
