Bets of the Day: Muirsheen Durkin will enjoy the conditions at Beverley

Both of Alan's selections traded below 1.42/5 in running yesterday but ultimately they both finished second. Today he has two more from the evening meetings at Windsor and Beverley...

19:55 Beverley - Back Muirsheen Durkin @ 9/2

There are a few runners that hold decent claims for this competitive handicap. However, my preference is for Muirsheen Durkin, who has a liking for the track, having won on two of his three starts here. This lightly-raced three-year-old is ran well in Class 4 handicap last time and while he is 4lbs higher today he gets a handy weight for age allowance, making him very capable against his older rivals. There are reasons to believe he will improve again today on just his third start this season and the ground will not be a problem, having already won on good to fast, unlike some of his rivals.

The two market principals at the time of writing are Saint Equiano who is also a course and distance winner and Navarone who won well over this trip at Carlisle earlier this month. The problem I have with both of these horses is the ground - the forecast going is reported as being good to firm (of course this is the English summer and things can change quickly) and neither of these have any form on fast ground. Saint Equiano has encountered it once and finished last of five runners and Navarone has never run when the word firm has been in the going.

19:45 Windsor - Back Pettochside Each Way @ 7/1

John Bridger's runner Pettochside ran well in ground that he wasn't suited too last time out and this softer ground can see him back to his best. This contest looks slightly weaker than when he ran fourth at Epsom last time out over six furlongs. Today he is down a 1lb and down a furlong both of which make him very dangerous in this field. When he won at Salisbury at the end of June he finished thee quarters of a length ahead of the staying-on Intibaah and I don't see any reason why that form should be reversed today and its hard to see him out the place money.

The current favourite is Roger Varian's Atletico, the lightly-raced five-year-old is making just his eighth career start today and its his first trip over the minimum distance. He was off the track for 676 days before returning at the beginning of June and has run well without winning in his two races, he certainly looks a worthy favourite and the one to beat but at the prices I am happy to side with Pettochside to at least make the frame.
