Bets of the Day: Dakota Grey is back off a winnable mark at his favourite venue

Dakota Grey hasn't finished worse than third in four runs at the track
Dakota Grey hasn't finished worse than third in four runs at the track

No luck for Alan yesterday with his two selections but he has two more for today from Carlisle and Lingfield...

"After Winning here he has returned to the track on three other occasions, finishing second, second and third"

Back Dakota Grey @ 5/1 in the 14:30 Carlisle

14:30 Carlisle - Back Dakota Grey @ 5/1

Micky Hammond's seven-year-old gelding Dakota Grey recorded his only success to date at this track over this course and distance a couple of years ago. He has returned to the track on three other occasions, finishing second, second and third and his latest trip to this track in December provided by far his best effort for a while, he is back now off a more realistic mark (100) and another visit to Carlisle fitted with first time cheekpieces at a tasty 5/1 has to make him of interest in this company.

There aren't too many recent winners in the field and Copper West is for me the rather surprising current market leader, that I am happy to take on. He wasn't great on his handicap debut last time, he traveled well but when asked the question there didn't seem to be much left in the tank. Because of that I can understand why Tom George would drop him in trip today but I think it could all happen a bit quick for this ex pointer, so I certainly wouldn't be interested backing him in this company at around 3/1.

There is some strength in depth in this race and one that I fear could give Dakota Grey the most to do is Lucinda Russell's charge Chasseur De Tete. He ran a career best last time out at Ayr where he stayed on well to the line and he could find this stiffer track to his liking, at 8/1 he warrants interest each way but my bet for the race is Dakota Grey to win at 5/1.

15:50 Lingfield - Back Petite Power @ 11/2

Nine runners will take on this three and a half mile slog in the mud, and the one I like is Fergal O'Brien's runner Petite Power. He was progressing well over hurdles last season and mixed it up with some chase starts, but it looks like he will now be targeted at the larger obstacles as all three of his starts this campaign have been in chases. He has won over fences before at Huntingdon on soft ground this time last year over two miles seven where he still looked full of running at the end and he has run well on each of his three chase starts this season, you get the feeling that second win over fences is just around the corner.

If he is to win this then it could well be The Artful Cobler that will give him the most to do, Henry Daly's progressive seven-year-old has taken very well to fences, improving to win his last two starts, so he comes into this race chasing a hat-trick of wins. While a 7lb rise ahead of his penultimate race wasn't enough to stop the grey gelding and a further 5lb rise may just prove too much for him making a bold hat-trick bid. He is obviously in fine form but I am not sure how much longer he can defy the handicapper.
