Bets of the Day: Coverham to make the long journey worthwhile

Both of Alan's selections were well backed yesterday but both could only finish third. Today his selections come from Kempton and Carlisle...

14:30 Kempton - Coverham @ 2/1 Sportsbook

I can't imagine this will be a nursery that will live long in the memory but I think that James Bethel may have found an ideal opportunity to get his two-year-old colt Coverham into the winners enclosure for the first time. He has been running in better quality races than this, and has been placed twice in his five starts. With only one previous winner in the field (Mesmeric Moment) it looks a particularly weak race and the first time cheekpieces should help him focus more.

Ted Durcan gets the leg up and is in fine form, riding a hat-trick at Thirsk on Friday and then following that up with a great ride on Cartmell Cleave at Newmarket on Saturday. He has a 21% strike rate when riding for the Bethel team and I don't think they will be sending Coverham all the way down to Kempton from North Yorkshrire for a day out.

19:15 Carlisle - Honeysuckle Lil @ 3/1 Sportsbook

Honeysuckle Lil has been running well recently without managing to get her head in front. Tim Easterby's four-year-old filly has been placed in three of her last four starts, all of which were over seven furlongs.

Today she will appreciate the drop in trip, she is yet to win over five furlongs but all three of her wins have come over six furlongs and this is a stiff five at Carlisle. In her last race she finished just a couple of lengths behind Hawatif who has won twice since, including a class two handicap at Goodwood last week.

It's the ultimate ladies day at Carlisle tonight, where all the races are for lady riders only and fortunately Rachel Richardson, one of the best female riders in the game, is on-board Honeysuckle Lil. She also gets on very well with the filly having won on her twice before, I think she is worth backing to make it a hat-trick.
