"Mizzou looked the one to beat but with his withdrawal Quest for More has been handed a great chance"
15:40 Doncaster - Quest for More @ 3/1 Sportsbook
The Doncaster Cup is the oldest race that still takes place under rules, first run in 1766 and for this 250th renewal of the race, Mizzou looked the one to beat but, following his withdrawal, Quest for More has been handed a great chance.
Roger Charlton's charge is a now worthy favourite for this great race. His six-year-old gelding was a big improver last year winning the Northumberland Plate and then going on to run in the Melbourne Cup where he ran a great race to finish just four lengths off the winner. Since then he has ran creditably at York and Goodwood before winning the Lonsdale Cup last time out at the Knavesmire last month.
The Doncaster Cup is over an extra two furlongs and the way he galloped his rivals into submission last time out suggests that won't be a problem. With Mizzou out of the way George Baker should be get his mount settled and get into a good position. He will have no problem with the track being a previous course winner and all his good recent work has been on similar tracks.
17:25 Doncaster - Nuno Tristan @ 3/1 Sportsbook
Richard Fahey's four-year-old gelding Nuno Tristan won impressively at Redcar in June and since then has ran creditably without winning in some big field handicaps, including a brilliant third off a mark of 93, beaten just a length in the 28-runner Stewards Sprint Cup at Goodwood, where had he not blown the start could have been even closer. He gets in here today off just a 1lb higher than that mark.
The Fahey team are in good form with two winners already from the meeting and the appointment of Jamie Spencer in the saddle is an interesting/positive booking.
Assuming normal racing tactics are used, expect Nuno Tristan to be held up and come from off the pace, hopefully picking them off on the run in, so Spencer is just the man to make that happen.
