Bets of the Day: Lough Salt can win at Catterick for Yorkshire trainer Mark Walford

Mark Walford may have found a good race for Lough Salt

Alan Thompson returns today, and even though we have lost Chepstow to a waterlogged course, Alan has found two selections from Catterick and Kempton to get his stint in the chair off to a good start...

"The six-year-old has only had seven career starts and he could still have more to offer in this company and trip"

Back Lough Salt @ 11/4 in the 14:45 Catterick

14:45 Catterick - Back Lough Salt @ 11/4

After a 263 day lay off Mark Walford's charge Lough Salt popped up at Wetherby in November over three miles and kept on well under Brian Hughes to win a shade easily in a Class 4 handicap. He then put in two decent efforts finishing in the frame, again both at Wetherby under today's jockey Jake Greenall. The six-year-old has only had seven career starts and he could still have more to offer in this company and trip.

This isn't a great handicap and Lough Salt could have a good chance to chalk up another win, of the leading market contenders I think the top weight Cooking Fat with Brian Hughes in the saddle could give him the most to do. Cracking Find for me will have to live up to his name and find something extra to win off 124 and the only time Brian Borahna got his head in front was when he passed the post first over course and distance but was later disqualified for carrying 2lbs less than he should have been, due to a hole in the saddle.

19:45 Kempton - Back Lacan @ 5/1

Lacan for the Ralph Beckett yard looks well handicapped to me in the penultimate race of the day at Kempton. A previous course and distance winner, he is now 7lb below his last winning mark and may well be very tough to beat if back to his best off a mark of 86. He gets in here of what will be his lowest career mark and I would be surprised if he didn't go very close at a decent price.

He was only seventh of nine runners in his last race but that was coming back after a 317 day break, and that pipe opener won't have done him any harm. He has only ever run at the course once but he made it a winning debut off a mark of 91 and with the accomplished Sean Levey in the plate there is plenty to like about Lacan today.
