Bets of the Day: Let's pray that Temple Church will get the trip today

Alan Thompson returns today looking to continue his good form from his last stint, he kicks off his week in the hot seat with two selections from Newbury and Newcastle...

Back Temple Church @ 9/2 in the 14:55 Newbury

14:55 Newbury - Back Temple Church @ 9/2

There is a lot to like about Hughie Morrison's charge Temple Church in the mile and a half handicap race at Newbury this afternoon, the lightly raced three-year-old has recently been gelded and always travels really well through his races but just not managing to get his head in front over shorter trips. There is a history of stamina in his breeding and he could really come into his own now that he is stepped up to this trip with a tongue strap fitted.

He looks to be off a decent mark, based on what he has done this season, he was only three lengths behind Defoe over a mile and a quarter at York in July from just a pound higher than he runs today, that form alone gives him a good chance in this. He has only had seven starts so there is every reason to expect more improvement and at 5.59/2 I think he has a good chance of adding to his sole win which came on this card last year.

18:15 Newcastle - Back Angel In The Snow @ 6/1

After nine flat starts Brian Ellison is still looking for his first win with Angel In The Snow, the four-year-old was initially tried on the all weather before embarking on four starts in novice hurdle company last winter and then returned to the flat on the turf this season. He returns today in this low grade handicap on the tapeta at Newcastle off a mark of just 48 and with more than capable stable apprentice, Ben Robinson (who rode two winners at Beverley yesterday), taking 5lbs off he must be in with a chance of getting his head in front today.

He has ran at Newcastle twice before finishing third and fourth and on both occasions was within a length and a half of the winner, on the second of those runs there was plenty of market support for him and was sent off the 3/1 favourite. He has shown he is more than capable on this surface, has a top apprentice on board and northern trainer Ellison is no stranger to the winners enclosure at the track, I think he is worthy of a small investment at 7.06/1.
