15:20 Redcar - Back Bulas Belle
A headline for Brian Badonde.
Edwin Tuer's Bulas Belle has the ability to be slightly better than a 60-odd rated handicapper, and if she can replicate her run at Catterick in September, she has a good chance of going well in this staying contest.
This is her best trip at 1m6f and her record with soft or heavy in the description is one of consistency; with two wins and four places. She travelled powerfully at Catterick when denied victory last month, and that was a 0-75, she has exactly the same set of circumstances here - trip, ground and grade.
She'll probably be out over hurdles soon I imagine (where she is rated 118), but she's much fresher than some of her rivals with just three runs in 2015. She was well beaten at Pontefract last time, but 1m4f on good ground on a track where they can get racing quite early wasn't for her. Plus it was an apprentice race.
With her hurdles rating she looks well treated, and more rain wouldn't go amiss whilst Barry McHugh takes over in the saddle.
13:40 Redcar - Back G K Chesterton
Friday's racing involves plenty of runners in lots of handicaps. Not the easiest ahead of a brilliant weekend at Ascot, so today's offerings are treading on the softly, softly side.
GK Chesterton holds a Derby entry, and has about as much chance of running in that as me riding in it. However, for a Charlie Appleby newcomer (who are often completely and utterly clueless on debut), he showed a lot of ability on his first start at Windsor.
Crucially that came in soft ground (and we should have easy ground on Friday), and as a son of Poet's Voice I wouldn't be too disheartened, as they seem to enjoy cut. I was impressed with his attitude on debut, between horses he never gave up, he just lacked a bit of know-how - but there was no shirking.
He was 8/1 that day, he won't be that price on Friday. His main rival is the overnight favourite Muzdawaj of William Haggas - but that horse is by Dansili and might want a quicker surface.
It's also encouraging that GK Chesterton is out so quickly (just 11 days), a win here might set him up for an all-weather campaign.
Friday's Recommended Bets
Back GK Chesterton @ 5/2 Sportsbook price in the 13:40 at Redcar
