Bets Of The Day: Tupi or not Tupi at Newmarket?

Alan Dudman resumes tipping duties, with his last column providing a winner at 5/1. He has two double-figure priced bets for the second day of the Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket...

"Tupi has a grand record at HQ (with two wins and a second), and whilst Time Test is the star name; four runners make for a possible 'cat and mouse' tactical affair, with Custom Cut (last year's winner) the front runner."

13:55 Newmarket - Back Mothers Finest

Much like many of the Listed races (and Group contests for that matter) with fillies and mares, this looks wide open.

The French raider Lavender Lane has form at the top level, but the rest of the contenders bring either Group 3 or handicap runs to the table.

My selection Mothers Finest might be a decent price, and the mile at Newmarket with a gallop will suit her. The Karl Burke trained filly ran poorly in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot earlier this season, and the fact she didn't race for two months afterwards suggested there might have been an excuse.

Her latest effort was more than pleasing; at Listed level in France. Jim Crowley had her in poor position, and like many races across the channel, they quickened down the straight leaving those in behind with a bit of work. She stayed on really well, and might have won with a stronger gallop.

If the ground is easy, it will be her first time with cut. But considering they sent her to Longchamp, I would be confident she can handle it.

15:05 Newmarket - Lay-to-back Hawksmoor

A rare beast indeed is the lay-to-back, and the first appearance in these parts.

I'll keep it simple for this Group 2 7f race, with Hugo Palmer's Hawksmoor as the candidate. Why? If the ground is soft she will relish the conditions, and she'll be the strongest in the finish as she's been crying out for a mile.

However, she did hit a high of 60 in-running during her success at Goodwood in the Prestige (a weak race), and she also near-enough doubled her BSP when winning on debut.

She has the form, which means she might start off around 2.65, and I would like to think she can hit around 5.04/1, as often some of these Newmarket races are perplexing tactical affairs. Or you could just throw in a high price in-play to get matched.

15:40 Newmarket - Back Tupi

I'll give one more chance for a horse I fancied at Glorious Goodwood - but he bombed out during that meeting and I blame an incident in the stalls.

His trainer rates him as a future Lockinge horse (or potential anyway), and he needs to show himself as the promising colt who beat Latharnach earlier in the season at Newmarket.

Tupi has a grand record at HQ (with two wins and a second), and whilst Time Test is the star name; four runners make for a possible 'cat and mouse' tactical affair, with Custom Cut (last year's winner) the front runner.
