Bets Of The Day: Look out for Powell and Johnston on Saturday

Jockey Jenny Powell teams up with Athletic again at York
Jockey Jenny Powell teams up with Athletic again at York

A blank day yesterday for Alan Dudman, but he's back with a pair of Mark Johnston runners at Ascot on Saturday, plus an old favourite at York...

"Reid's runner needs a specific set of circumstances, weaving through a big field off a pace. His rider Jenny Powell has struck up a good relationship with the horse, who needs producing late."

Back Athletic at 10.5019/2 and lay back in-running at 5.04/1 in the 14:20 at York

13:30 Ascot - Back Sixth Sense

As Graham Taylor once said: "Do I not like that." I didn't like yesterday's results, especially that place lay of Lemoncetta, but we go again. I'll talk more about backing horses from this yard with Rah Rah, but one of my little punting nuances is to look for Mark Johnston runners in a small field.

With only four going to post and the ground possibly bordering on heavy, siding with Sixth Sense might be the sensible play.

He should lead and this will be a totally different race to his effort from the front when appearing in the Chesham. William Buick can control this and dictate and use the fact he's battle-hardened, plus he has faced soft ground already in his career.

A back-to-lay looks an easy option, but around 3.4012/5 overnight looked tempting considering he steps back up to seven furlongs.

14:05 Ascot - Back Rah Rah

Johnston had another batch of winners on Friday, and I wouldn't be in a club of one in struggling to work out the yard's runners. Something I like to stick to though; is never be afraid to back one from the Middleham base at a price. And I can't help feeling that Rah Rah looks too big in the market.

The ground could be bottomless as mentioned, come the start of play on Saturday. Therefore the testing conditions might prove too much for some.

Rah Rah is big in physique, although not quite Acapulco territory. And those two clashed in 'the land of the giants' in the Queen Mary - and five furlongs wasn't really her bag.

With her size and experience, and the fact she won the Lily Agnes with cut in the ground, she shouldn't be as big as 7.06/1 considering her run with Besharah last time at Newmarket. Plus her Aussie sire Lonhro can get some soft ground performers.

14:20 York - Back Athletic

I'm relying on Andrew Reid's smashing horse Athletic to make a profit in-running on the Knavesmire on Saturday.

The likeable six-year-old gained his first win of the season a week ago at Newmarket with his trademark 'Athletic' style. He came late, he travelled, and he went on to score (unlike many of Taylor's England picks - Andy Sinton anyone?).

Reid's runner needs a specific set of circumstances, weaving through a big field off a pace. His rider Jenny Powell has struck up a good relationship with the horse, who needs producing late.

The weather forecast at York is overcast, but the rain looks set for the following the day. Even if it arrives, I don't think it will hinder his chances. Considering he is trading at 10.5019/2, we should be able to get him to around 5.04/1 to lock in a profit and have a free bet going for you.
