The two mile Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup nearly always provides a heartwarming story, being contested by popular long-standing stayers who grow close to the hearts of the betting public.

In 2006 the popular Sergeant Cecil landed the spoils (and plenty of tasty bets in the process) and, should he face the starter again, the statistics suggest he would have a very solid chance of landing the odds for a second time as the race in the last two decades has a history of dual winners such as Persian Punch, Celeric, Double Eclipse and Further Flight.

There are no particularly strong trends to guide the odds makers for this Group 2 event, but trainer John Dunlop (two winners) and jockey Richard Quinn (also two winners) have made some impression on a race that provides betting fans with plenty of strong and reliable form lines on which to bet, as most of the contenders have tended take on one another a number of times already during the course of the season.
