One of the hottest betting heats of the whole racing calendar, York's Totesport Ebor Handicap will attract mountains of serious bets in an event where the odds and statistics both suggest that virtually anything is possible.
Last year saw just about the biggest shock in living memory when Mudawin, 100/1 in the betting, defied those huge odds and left most betting tickets in tatters when landing Europe's richest handicap for trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam and jockey John Egan. Hugs Dancer at odds of 25/1 and Saint Alebe at 20/1 have also left the betting public with something to ponder in recent times, whilst the last winning favourite was Henry Cecil's Tuning in 1998.
Although the race is run over a mile-and-three-quarters, those having a bet will note that horses drawn low in what is traditionally something of a cavalry charge have a perceived advantage, whilst trainer Luca Cumani is very much a man to include in betting calculations having won the race in 1999 with Vicious Circle and again in 2004 with Mephisto.
