Run in early March over an extended mile on the Polytrack circuit at Wolverhampton, the Lincoln Trial Handicap is a 'Heritage' event that is in itself a decent betting heat, but more importantly offers clues to some of the leading candidates in the ante-post betting odds list for the Lincoln Handicap later in the month.

In the early renewals of this contest the race proved a solid guide to Lincoln winners, but is now used equally as a warm-up for the Winter Derby, another hot betting event, run at Lingfield a couple of weeks later.

Leading all-weather jockey Neil Callan has won the race twice in the last five years on horses returning at odds of 12/1 & 16/1 respectively, so is clearly a man to consider when weighing up a bet on the race.

Trainer Gay Kelleway also likes to target this event and won in 2003 with Te Quiero (at odds of 16/1) and then again 12 months later with Vortex (at odds of 7/1). Only one betting favourite in the last eight runnings has obliged, making this a moderate event for those who like to bet on the horse at the head of the odds list.
