The Group 1 Irish St Leger, run over one mile six furlongs at the Curragh racecourse has proved to be a solid betting opportunity for punters who like to tailor their bets to following trends.
Since being opened up to older horses in 1983, the race has a history of multiple winners with Vintage Crop, Oscar Schindler and Kayf Tara all landing the prize twice in the 1990's before Vinnie Roe overcame all the odds to delight the betting public by winning the race four successive years (2001-4).
Both Vinnie Roe and Vintage Crop were trained by Dermot Weld, whose representatives in the Irish St Leger, clearly pay to follow in the betting
Five, six and seven-year-olds have a particularly good record in the race and are often prominent in the betting, whilst the only three-year-old to triumph since 1989 is the legendary Vinnie Roe, who made the race very much his own at the start of this decade winning at a variety of odds.
