One of the major betting races of the National Hunt season, the Grade 3 Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, run in late November at Newbury over three-and-a-quarter miles, has a long and proud history of producing high class winners.
The race is invariably run at a strong pace, all but guaranteeing that the wining form will be solid, and the performances of the leading contenders can have a significant impact on ante-post odds betting list for other major chases later in the season. Sometimes long range betting coups are planned ahead of the race and serious bets can be noted at big odds in the ante-post betting lists some months before the race itself.
Despite this being one of the most competitive handicap chases of the season, market principals have a good record of landing winning bets in the race. Recent winning favourites such as Strong Gold and Celestial Gold and other strong betting fancies, like Trabolgan and last year's winner State Of Play, make this a good race for the formbook and those trading at single-figure odds.
An impressive performance in the 'Hennessy' can see a horse catapulted into the spotlight for both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National.
