The Group 2 Hackney Empire Royal Lodge Stakes is an interesting betting contest which is a traditional pointer to the aspirations of relatively late maturing juvenile colts and geldings who are likely to be suited by middle distances as three-year-olds.
Consequently, the Newmarket race can have a significant effect on ante-post odds and betting for the following season's classics.
The mile contest has proved a happy hunting ground for those liking a bet on trainer Aidan O'Brien who has won the race three times in the last eight years, whilst in 1996 John Gosden sent out Benny The Dip to score and establish his credentials for the year to come. He subsequently went on to land some hefty bets when defying odds of 11/1 to win the 1997 Epsom Derby.
Those who like to bet on Frankie Dettori have collected three times in the last 12 years, most recently aboard Saeed bin Suroor's Perfectperformance, surprisingly the only winner in the history of the race for the Godolphin but the powerful team could well be prominent in the betting for future renewals.
