The final leg of the stayers 'Triple Crown', the two-and-a-quarter-mile Group 2 GNER Doncaster Cup is a race rich in tradition that always appeals to the betting public.
Many punters often place their bets on long-standing favourites who compete in the race year after year, often at attractive odds.
In 2006 (when the race was run at York), Sergeant Cecil brought the house down when galloping to victory to land the odds, whilst in recent years other popular successes have included Millenary (twice) and the great Persian Punch. In the late 1990's Mark Johnston's great stayer Double Trigger famously won the race three times to endear himself forever to the legions of punters who had bets on the Middleham-based star.
Those looking to bet on the Doncaster Cup should note it is very much a race for older horses and only two three-year-olds have won the race since in the last 20 years -Weld in 1989 and Alleluia in 2001, so the odds are that one of the well established senior stayers will once again carry off the prize.
