Sussex Stakes: Timeform's runner-by-runner guide

Dawn Approach is favourite for the Sussex Stakes

Timeform take you through the runners for the 2013 Qipco Sussex Stakes...

"Toronado ran out an impressive winner of the Craven on return, and clearly not himself in the Guineas. Got much closer to Dawn Approach at Royal Ascot having met trouble, and worth a chance to reverse form now."

Declaration of War has arrived at the top table this year, overcoming trouble to win the Queen Anne Stakes, and creditable second to Al Kazeem over 10 furlongs in the Eclipse last time. Bit more needed to topple the 'big two'.

Gregorian boasts very smart sort in his own right, winning Diomed Stakes at Epsom in June, but held by Declaration of War when third in the Queen Anne, and also has the top three-year-olds to contend with here.

Reply finished third in last year's Irish Guineas. Won listed race at Naas in June but has lost his form since, and here only to make the pace for stablemate Declaration of War.

Trade Storm impressed in Dubai earlier in the year but not quite the same force since return to home soil, finishing fifth in Queen Anne and fourth in the Summer Mile. Looks up against it here.

Dawn Approach has only been defeated once in nine starts, that in the Derby, and beat Toronado in both the Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes. Short break since latter will have done him good, and clearly a major contender again.

Leitir Mor finished runner-up in Dewhurst Stakes as a two-year-old, and confirmed himself a smart colt when winning Group 3 at Leopardstown last month. Pacemaker for Dawn Approach at Royal Ascot, and reprises that role here.

Toronado ran out an impressive winner of the Craven on return, and clearly not himself in the Guineas. Got much closer to Dawn Approach at Royal Ascot having met trouble, and worth a chance to reverse form now.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Toronado
2. Dawn Approach
3. Declaration of War

Timeform view: Dawn Approach has beaten Toronado twice this year, but the latter still appeals as having a bigger performance in him, and is taken to gain revenge on his old rival for a narrow and luckless defeat at Royal Ascot. Declaration of War will be on hand should either of the 'big two' falter.
