For the final time this week the Follow the Money team bring us three bets from the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
"Early trades on Withersnea were around 55.054/1 and he is now hovering around the 28.027/1 mark and we are hoping for a big run in the cavalry charge that is the Stewards’ Cup."
With very few opportunities to find a drifter at a reasonable price to lay at Goodwood we start off with a place lay in the 14:00 for Projection. Roger Charlton's three year old was forecast to go off at 11/2 in most betting tissues but has drifted from 6.05/1 out to 7.613/2 and is available to lay in the place at 2.588/5. Despite Ryan Moore being confident in his column the market has been pessimistic about the horse's chance all morning. Six furlongs at Goodwood tends to favour low drawn horses and he is in stall 22. He also hung slightly last time out at Newmarket which would be a worry at this unique Sussex course. Our recommendation is to take him on in the place.
For our each-way selection we turn to the Qatar Stewards' Cup at 15:45, and an early move for Withernsea. Richard Fahey's five-year-old is drawn in one of the favourable low stalls (six) and has pace to aim at in the form Ridge Ranger (Stall 2), Jamesie (3), Dancing Star (4) and Red Pike (5). He tends to come from off the pace and responds to pressure which will certainly be needed here. He has proved he can go close off this mark, as he did so two runs ago at Newmarket, and connections have chosen to drop him back down to six furlongs for the first time since April 2015. Early trades were around 55.054/1 and he is now hovering around the 28.027/1 mark and we are hoping for a big run in the cavalry charge that is the Stewards' Cup.
To complete the Glorious Festival we end with a move for Bathos in the 18:00 Apprentice Handicap. Mark Johnston, who has had a good week as he so often does at this meeting, puts Ross Coakley up on board and the market has moved from 9.15 in to 6.611/2. The three-year-old colt won over course and distance in May off a mark of 85 and was raised to 90 after that. But on the back of three average runs he finds himself back down at 87 and one presumes that this was the target since that win. With the two most likely front runners drawn in stalls 2 and 18 there could well be a chance for the horse to get into a good prominent position early and dictate all the way.
Place lay Projection @ 2.568/5 in the 14:00 at Goodwood
Back Withernsea e/w @ 28.027/1 in the 15:45 at Goodwood
Back Bathos @ 6.6011/2 in the 18:00 at Goodwood
