Racing has returned to Doncaster racecourse after an absence of 20 months up until August 2007, with the South Yorkshire track having undergone extensive refurbishment.
Doncaster's two day 'Trophy' meeting in late-October is a highly significant fixture in the betting calendar as the principal event, the Racing post Trophy, a two-year-old Group 1 contest run over a testing mile, has proved an excellent guide in recent years to the odds and betting for the following season's Derby and other major races.
Two of the last three winners, Motivator and Authorized, have gone on to Epsom glory the following year, making the race all the more significant for the betting public who will tailor their bets with half a mind on the year to come. Ante-post odds compilers will be swift to alter their betting offers the moment the race has been concluded.
Irish maestro Aidan O'Brien has made his mark on the race as well, winning four of the last 10 runnings and his representatives always attract plenty of betting market interest regardless of the odds (he often runs two or three in the race).
Northern jockey Kevin Darley (not immediately associated with O'Brien) has surprisingly partnered the trainer's last two winners of the race in High Chapparal (2001) and Brian Boru (2002) and should the team up again the odds are that their candidate will attract serious betting interest given the pair's record in the race.
The Racing Post trophy is the centrepiece of a seven race card on the Saturday of the fixture, the race being supported by some competitive handicap races and a couple of decent conditions events, all of which offer the opportunity for bets and decent odds as there are usually plenty of runners, regardless of the going.
