The first pattern event of the flat season on turf, the Doncaster Mile will return to its traditional home for the first time since 2004 and will doubtless prove a solid betting heat.

The contest, run on the straight mile, invariably attracts a small but select field and has proved a good race for those at the head of the betting odds list, and in particular for horses trained by John Dunlop. The Arundel handler sent out three successive winners between 2001-3 including Dandoun, who was twice sent off a heavily bet market leader at odds of just 11/10.

The last horse to win the race at Doncaster before it was re-routed to other courses during the track's redevelopment, was subsequent champion hurdler Sublimity, who was the subject of plenty of betting interest when scoring under Johnny Murtagh in 2004.

It is rare for a horse with an official rating of less than 100 to score in this race, and those considering a bet should look for proven group race performers who can handle some give in the ground.
