The six furlong Diadem Stakes, run at Ascot over the straight but very testing six furlongs, is an intriguing Group 2 betting contest which offers an opportunity for classy sprinters just short of the very highest grade.

Those looking to bet on the big guns usually hold their fire until the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye Stakes at Longchamp at the start of October when they dominate the betting market.

Consequently, the Diadem Stakes hasn't always been won by a horse out of the top drawer and ante-post betting markets and the betting public alike will carefully consider the merit of the form shown. The race does however offer a significant prize and betting action and changing odds are often as fast and furious and the race itself.

Amongst the training ranks there are few strong trends worthy of mention, but jockey Johnny Murtagh has proved worth a bet and overcome the odds over the last nine years having won the race on three occasions, unusually for three different trainers, most recently aboard Amanda Perret's Baron's Pit in 2005.
