Run at Lingfield on the Polytrack all-weather circuit, the Betdiect Winter Derby is a Group 3 contest over 10 furlongs that has proved popular with the betting public and is the culmination of the winter all-weather flat racing season in Britain.

Since it was first staged in 1998, the race has been won by a variety of lower pattern class horses and smart handicappers, who have a particular liking for the artificial racing surface. This fact should always be borne in mind by those wishing to place a bet on the race, as the event is littered with classy turf performers who have failed to translate their ability and carried many bets and restrictive odds back into the bookies satchels.

No trainer has won the race twice and only Frankie Dettori has managed to chalk up two victories in the race, most recently aboard Caluki, at odds of 14/1, in 2004.

In 2007, Mick Easterby's Gentlemen's Deal justified odds of 4/1 joint favouritism to buck a trend that had seen those at the head of the betting list struggle to justify confidence of those seeking a bet.
