Run at Lingfield in mid-March, the seven furlong listed Spring Cup is a competitive betting heat that attracts classy performers, most of whom are familiar to the betting public having competed on artificial surfaces in Britain throughout the winter.
Some horses however, are trained specifically for this race as a seasonal reappearance, making betting decision somewhat tricky.
In its five-year history, no horse at longer odds than 8/1 inaugural winner Membership has triumphed. In the last three years, whilst a series of heavily bet favourites have been turned over, the market second best has been very successful with odds of 7/2, 7/2 & 4/1 being returned about the winners, the most recent being the 2007 scorer Hinton Admiral, trained by Mark Johnston.
Trainer Clive Brittain, ever popular with the betting public for sending out long-odds winners, seems to target this race and has won it twice in five years, as has jockey Frankie Dettori, who partnered the only winning favourite in Rosencrans (at odds of 6/4) in 2004.
