Today's Racing News: Return of the Mak at Musselburgh while Buick heads to Wolves

Musselburgh is the feature meeting of the day.

Welcome to Monday, where we have four flat meetings for punters to get stuck into and here with all the daily info is Betfair daily columnist and tipster Daryl Carter.

"Tarboosh looks on the downgrade now, and Indian Sounds shouldn't be good enough to land this event on ratings, so with El Astronaute and Roulston Scar likely to take each other on up front, that should pave the way for Makanah to finish strongly."

Yep, a quiet start to the week with just the four meetings across the country, but there are some good bets out there today and some interesting angles.

Oisin Murphy and William Buick continue their battle for the Jockey Championship at separate meetings today. The former heads to Kempton while the latter has a strong book of rides at Wolverhampton.

Outside of those two, I am hoping the Mak can attack at Musselburgh (see below), while Yarmouth is sure to be an informative card with some well-bred two-year-olds taking the stage for the first time.

The opening 13:00 contest at Yarmouth is worth getting those notebooks out. John Gosden has won the race twice in the last three years, and surprisingly, the only horse to fail to score for the yard was the outstanding Mishriff in 2019 - He runs Salvator Mundi 9.08/1 and Samburu 17.016/1.

Last year's renewal produced the Newbury London Gold Cup winner Bay Bridge and Royal Ascot winner Rohaan. The big yards like this race.

In the 15:15 at Yarmouth, three-year-olds have scored in three of the last four runnings. Today there are only two entered. Stay Coul 8.07/1 and Janie James 34.033/1.

At Musselburgh today, there are 80 runners at the time of writing - 40 of them wear headgear, which is nothing more than a fun fact to geek out.

At Kempton, trainer Tom Ward has had more winners at this venue than any other in the last five years, including six this term with a strike rate of 21%. I have been waiting a long time for his Mishal Star 6.05/1 to run in a handicap, and she looks to have a great chance in the 19:00.

Buick hunting down Murphy with eight rides at Wolves

Jockey William Buick certainly hasn't given up on chasing Oisin Murphy down for the Jockey Championship. The rider has been operating at a 20% strike rate in the last 14 days and today has a full book of eight rides at Wolverhampton.

Murphy is at Kempton this evening, but Buick's biggest priced runner today is Poet in the 14:50, priced at just 8/1.

Five of his eight rides are priced shorter than 9/4, resulting in a combination fivefold of 109/1. Back it on the Betfair Sportsbook here.

13:40 - Pocket The Profit 2.01/1
15:25 - Twilight Secret 2.56/4
16:00 - Infrared 3.259/4
16:35 - Pretty Sweet 3.02/1
17:10 - Toromona 2.01/1

Trainer William Haggas has been operating at a 29% strike rate in the last 14 days and today has seven runners across the cards.

17:10 Wolverhampton - Lady Rockstar

Furthest traveller

Today's furthest traveller is trainer Hugo Palmer who travels 358 miles from his base in Newmarket to Musselburgh. He has one runner on the card. Eastern Sheriff 1.910/11 in the 13:50 will be just his eighth runner at the course.

Race of the day

We head to Musselburgh today, and the feature race is the 16:10 Racing TV Bass Rock Handicap, a race over 7f which has attracted a competitive field of 11.

Zip is rock solid at this level and has conditions to suit, so he could prove dangerous to underestimate from a low draw in stall four.

He lost little in defeat to Redarna at Ayr last time when the drying ground went against him, but it was a creditable third in arguably a deeper contest than this one despite this a step back up in grade.

He is starting to look consistent rather than progressive, and for all, it would be no surprise to see him land this contest; there may be one or two better handicapped.

Eagleway is one of the less exposed types in this field, and his best performance in three starts for this yard on UK shores came when second over 7f on soft ground in the Victoria Cup at Ascot.

He has conditions to repeat that performance for the first time and is certainly no forlorn hope on returning from wind surgery.

The wide draw in stall 11 is a concern, but he is one of the more intriguing runners at a price.

On A Session heads the market after his near-miss at Galway last time out, but it must be remembered that he did the same last season, and it wasn't an improved performance this time around.

He has been well-held in competitive events this season, and the soft ground does temper enthusiasm.

However, he gives the impression that there is a bigger performance in him, and he is drawn well in stall two to avoid a troubled passage in the run.

He would be a tentative selection if one were over a barrel.

Return of the Mak

At Musselburgh in the 15:00 British EBF Flying Scotsman Conditions Stakes, Makanah makes serious appeal in his bid to land the race for the second year running.

Very few would argue that the six-year-old deserves to be three for three at this course after finding plenty of trouble in the running on his latest visit here when beaten a short-head by Mokaatil in a handicap off of a mark of 99.

That performance confirmed that he is not only consistent here at Musselburgh but runs and records his best figures at this track.

He won this race last year in comfortable style on similar soft ground despite giving eight pounds to the 105 rated Danzeno, and this time around, he is in receipt of three pounds from the 105 rated Roulston Scar who is not guaranteed to improve for soft ground.

There look to be stacks of pace on in this race to suit, which will be a negative for today's favourite, who has had soft leads in small fields the last twice.

Tarboosh looks on the downgrade now, and Indian Sounds shouldn't be good enough to land this event on ratings, so with El Astronaute and Roulston Scar likely to take each other on up front, that should pave the way for Makanah to finish strongly.

Final Word

Absolutely thrilled to see the action at Chepstow over the weekend, and although it's a shame that the National Hunt season feels a bit stop-start during the month of October, it is at least back!

I do have my advisory hat on again, though. I see it every year, and it's the same again this year. Please do not take early season form as literal.

For example, Bravemansgame was excellent at the weekend, taking in an Intermediate Chase defeating Fusil Raffles, but he was in receipt of 12lbs effectively, meaning he only had to run up to a mark of 144 to win, providing Fusil ran to his rating.

He is a very exciting horse, but the memories of seven months ago shouldn't be forgotten entirely on the back of one performance.

On a positive note, what a way to start the season!

Until tomorrow, be lucky.
