Bets Of The Day: Smith's Perseid the one at Southwell

Two non-runners and a winner from yesterday, now Alan Dudman turns to the jumps at Southwell for Sunday's racing, and an interesting angle on a lazy customer...

"That was over 2m4f and I am very positive about him stepping up in trip - which brings the In-Play angle in to trade higher. He isn't a bridle merchant."

17:05 Fontwell - Back in-play Orsm

From an in-running point of view - Orsm makes for fascinating reading. Two defeats at Fontwell have seen Laura Mongan's horse register a 1.20 and 1.75, whilst his win at Plumpton hit a high of 44. We might just be able to explore that avenue with this lazy customer.

Lazy isn't a bad thing in this case, as I'm banking on Orsm finishing his race well. I'd rather a lazy streak than a horse that doesn't find.

Anyway, his overall his record makes for grim reading, but he turned the corner four starts back with his victory; which owed to a wind op. Going fresh isn't a problem, and the fact he is seeing out his races with a more willing attitude is a huge plus.

It's a long shot here, but throwing small stakes at big prices in-running could be a play. I'm happy with setting the 21.020/1 mark to get matched.

17:35 Southwell - Back Perseid

This hurdles race is a real curate's egg, and Jonjo O'Neill's runner Steps And Stairs will likely be around the 2/1 mark, which isn't a wild price, but a pair of seconds at Worcester and Uttoxeter means it's understandable - and he's improved in his last two runs.

However, Perseid interests me greatly here at odds of around 5/1, and he might trade bigger in the run. I'll also be watching his price to see if he features in the market movers.

It's an obvious port of call to highlight his effort last time - a hurdling personal best to date (but has won a bumper). He didn't get the cleverest of rides at Worcester in that race - coming from quite a way behind to finish strongly. That was over 2m4f and I am very positive about him stepping up in trip - which brings the In-Play angle in to trade higher. He isn't a bridle merchant.

The five-year-old is unexposed, and the same cannot be said for a couple of old rivals. A favourite of mine; Feeling Peckish is in the line-up, and I hope he gets round. However, his last win came when the racecards were printed in Latin.
