There's a horse that should love the ground at Newmarket according to Alan Dudman, and he's found an interesting stayer to back in the finale at HQ on Saturday...

"Trainer Simon Crisford's horses have been running well this week, and I like the booking of top apprentice Jason Watson to ease some of the burden of top weight."

Back Percy's Word @ [8.0] in the 17:30 at Newmarket

Rain perfect for Tate's mudlark

15:10 Newmarket - Back Awake My Soul @ [9.0]

Tom Tate's Awake My Soul hasn't been seen on a racetrack since April - which is a good thing as the horse needs soft ground. It's a must. He would have hated the heatwave and all that fast turf.

I don't think you'll see him at Bath.

Whether he's had a hold-up or setback I dont know, we'll have to take that on the chin after a 114-day break, but the rain arriving yesterday is perfect for the horse and he is worth backing at near-double figures.

He shaped well on reappearance in the Silver Bowl at Ripon, perhaps paying the price for racing out in the lead. It was his first run so he might have just needed it to blow away some fitness cobwebs.

Awake My Soul ran in some good handicaps last season, and the veteran has a chance here.

Percy can showcase his stamina

17:30 Newmarket - Back Percy's Word @ [8.0]

The ground turning soft on Friday evening has changed things a bit with a view to the Newmarket card, but I am hoping the 2m in the softer conditions will make this race a real stamina test - and that will suit Percy's Word.

One thing I love about the Sir Percy sons and daughters is that they stay well. Stamina is their game. Sir Percy is also a bit of an underrated stallion.

His son Percy's Word is very lightly-raced for a four-year-old but at times he has displayed flashes of a potentially useful stayer. He won a 2m race around Kempton in a good time and looked relentless with the way he kept going. He ran well at that track last month on his reappearance in a 0-90.

Trainer Simon Crisford's horses have been running well this week, and I like the booking of top apprentice Jason Watson to ease some of the burden of top weight.

With only three starts on turf, we have to take a punt whether the soft will suit. But the horse won't lack for stamina.
