Nick Shiambouros returns to the tipping chair with three selections from the outstanding Boxing Day card at Kempton...

"I thought that was a super effort, and can take this on his way to better things"

Back Native River at 3.02/1 in the 14:00 at Kempton

12:50 Kempton - Altior

Altior should go close in the opening race of the day.

This talented performer beat Maputo in determined fashion at Cheltenham last month. He found a little extra when challenged by the runner-up and won with a bit to spare.

I was very impressed with his attitude and clearly has a bright future. He is trading at 2.6213/8 which is just about right.

Marracudja could be the main danger to the selection. He has won a couple of novices' hurdles in great style and is open to further improvement.

Open Eagle is the current second favourite at 4.3100/30. He was a decent flat performer and was impressive when beating Double Island at Fairyhouse last month. He must be respected, but this is a major step up in class and represents poor value.

14:00 Kempton - Native River

Native River looks like the one to beat in this fascinating contest.

This gelding beat Un Temps Pour Tout at Newbury last month. He took the lead approaching the last and quickly put the issue beyond doubt. I thought that was a super effort, and can take this on his way to better things.

He is trading at 3.02/1 on the exchange and I have backed him at this price.

The main danger is Tea For Two ridden by Lizzie Kelly. This gelding was most impressive when beating Oscar Sunset at Exeter earlier this month in testing conditions. He took the lead three from home and pulled clear to win with any amount in hand.

He is the big improver in the race, but I am not convinced he can get home over this trip.

15:10 Kempton - Smad Place

Smad Place could run well at a big price in this strong renewal.

This gelding won the Hennessy in great style at Newbury last month. He built up a commanding lead three from home and put a quality field to the sword. There was a lot to like about his performance, and it is significant that connections have decided to let him take his chance today.

He is trading at 9.617/2 on the exchange which is more than fair.

The current favourite is Don Cossack who is trading at 3.259/4 on the exchange. His last defeat over fences was in the Ryanair at Cheltenham and is strictly the one to beat.

Trainer Gordon Elliot has given him a couple of easy races to get him ready and comes in to this race in excellent heart.

Silviniaco Conti is bidding to win this race for the third year in a row, but appears to be up against it after his defeat by Cue Card in the Betfair Chase.
