Nick Shiambouros was on the mark yesterday when Montalcino ran in to a place at a generous 5.8 BSP. Nick returns with two big priced selections from HQ and Goodwood...
"This is one of the most competitive handicaps of the year, but I think he has the ability to go close and represents super value at 36.035/1 to win and 7.26/1 to place on the Exchange."
14:15 Newmarket - Banzari
The lightly raced Banzari is an interesting runner in this Listed event.
This Motivator filly finished an excellent fourth to the classy Diamondsandrubies at Chester at the beginning of May. She delivered a challenge a furlong from home, but the winner found another gear and was firmly put in her place.
Last season her trainer thought she was good enough to take her chance in the May Hill at Doncaster. She ended up finishing a creditable fifth to Agnes Stewart over a trip that was shorter than ideal.
My only concern is that the ground could be a little quick for her, but at her current price of 13.5 on the exchange I am prepared to have a go. She has plenty of upside and I am expecting a big run.
The John Gosden trained Gretchen is the current favourite at 5.14/1. She contested the Irish Oaks at the Curragh last month and finished down the field behind Covert Love. She will appreciate the ease in grade, and could give the selection most to do.
15:45 Goodwood - Lancelot Du Lac
Lancelot Du Lac could run well at a big price in this historic sprint.
This talented gelding has cracked heads with the best sprinters in the country in the past couple of months and has acquitted himself admirably.
Last time out at HQ he finished eighth in the July Cup, and was not beaten all that far behind Muhaarar. Before that he ran a blinder in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot when finishing third to Interception.
This is one of the most competitive handicaps of the year, but I think he has the ability to go close and represents super value at 36.035/1 to win and 7.26/1 to place on the Exchange.
I will be gutted if Tropics wins as he has done me plenty of favours over the years. Last time out in the July Cup he was caught right on the line and deserves to win a big contest. He is handicapped to the hilt, but I would not dismiss him lightly.
The consistent Jack Dexter is another hard knocking sprinter that merits consideration. He should run his race but I think the ground could be against him.
