Bets of the Day: Night of Thunder may travel well but can he finish the job in the Lockinge?

Night of Thunder just failed against the very classy Charm Spirit in the QE II Stakes
Night of Thunder just failing against the very classy Charm Spirit in the QE II Stakes

Notarised won the Jorvic Stakes at York yesterday and was Alan Thompson's back-to-lay selection at odds of 14.5. Today he has another exchange play, this time on the favourite in the Lockinge as well as a fancy in the Newbury 6f Listed race...

"Being a strong traveller I think he'll ease into the race and trade shorter than his current available price on the Exchange of 3.953/1"

Back Night of Thunder 15.45 Newbury @ 3.953/1, lay in-running @ 2.747/4 or shorter

Night of Thunder in the Lockinge to trade shorter in-running

One pound clear on the adjusted ratings he has by far the best form in the race and has been purchased by Godolphin to boot. That form of his rates him clear of the field and had he been ridden better in the QE II Stakes on his last run of the 2014 season then I'm sure he would have won, but given too much to do he just failed to collar the very classy Charm Spirit.

Being a strong traveller I think he'll ease into the race and trade shorter in-running than his current available price on the Exchange of 3.953/1. However, he's up against some decent race-fit rivals, so it could be a case that he travels into the race like the winner but whether he can get the best of a big and, more importantly, fit field is open to question. One thing I'm confident about is that he should trade shorter than 2.747/4 in-running - which is the point I will be laying to green up my position, but he could trade even shorter than this.

Waady in the 14:35 at Newbury looks a good bet to win the 6f Listed prize

He quickened well last time at Sandown in the style of a very classy horse and despite him having a few pounds to find he looks the type to keep on progressing. The stable are bang in form and have been all season, with Paul Hanagan riding at the peak of his powers.

I expect to see him cruise into the race and then quicken away in the closing stages. Some punters may be worried about the step up in trip but Sandown's five furlongs is the stiffest in the country and he was strong at the line, suggesting this extra furlong won't be a problem. I will be backing Waady on the Sportsbook to take advantage of the excellent SP 3/1+ promotion, available for every race at Newbury and Newmarket today.
