Perseid's second at Southwell yesterday meant a blank for the column, but Alan Dudman is hoping for better things in Essex on Monday...
"I think Jim Crowley will have Atalan a bit closer to the pace than last time. He's also a half-brother to Vent De Force - a very talented stayer for the yard."
Racegoers to the Essex venue on Monday night will get the chance to view a really talented horse in the shape of Maftool.
Scouring the declarations; it was a pleasant surprise to see his name included for this small field Conditions race, and the Godolphin operaton have used the track to enable one of theirs to recapture some past glories. Indeed, one-time Derby hope Pinzolo scored here back in May.
The plus points for Maftool are threefold. The visor replaces the cheekpieces (his record in the visor reads 1,2). The drop back in trip from 11f gives us a tick in the box. Finally, being by Hard Spun - this track and surface should really suit. His form on artificial terrain in Meydan (winning the UAE 2000 Guineas and runner-up in the UAE Derby) should make him a cut above.
The blue machine really start to kick into gear on the all-weather around August to September, and we have a chance to back a decent performer at odds of 3/1 on the Sportsbook.
19:55 Chelmsford - Back Atalan
Hughie Morrison has shown quite a liking for sending a stayer to Chelmsford. Star Rider won here by four lengths in May, and Atalan has been a visitor twice - gaining a victory and a second.
Armed with the fact we know the horse handles the surface well, his second try at the two miles should also bring about improvement.
His latest run over course and distance has seen the handicapper raise him 3lb for a five length defeat. He met Duke Street that day, and the winner got first run. Atalan travelled very smoothly held off the pace though, and the way he scored over 1m6f here previously suggested he looked like a stayer.
The contest comprises of just seven runners and we also have two veterans in the line-up - including the thoroughly likeable Goldan Jess. He should actually make the running, and I think Jim Crowley will have Atalan a bit closer to the pace than his previous outing. He's also a half-brother to Vent De Force - a very talented stayer for the yard.
